INSIDE: When you are considering herbal tinctures verses mother tinctures, it’s important to know the difference. Here are some facts and guidelines to help you.

For those of you that may either make your own tinctures, want to make them, or you’re just curious, here are some facts that may inspire you...

What is the difference between a mother tincture and an herbal tincture?

The main difference between a mother tincture vs. an herbal tincture is the dilution in the alcohol solution. An herbal tincture is more powerful because it has more of the raw material in the tincture medicine compared to a mother tincture, which is more diluted.

What is the potency of each type of tincture?

An herbal tincture has an alcohol ratio of one part to nine parts alcohol, which is known as a 1x remedy in homeopathic medicine.

Can I make my own tinctures?

You can make your own herbal or mother tincture remedies, although it is important to ensure that the raw material used as the tincture base is free of pesticides and from a clean source.

How fast do mother tinctures work?

Mother tinctures have a very fast action and the effect can be felt sometimes within minutes as they are well accepted in the body, especially through the digestion system (if taken correctly and spaced separately from meals).

What precautions should I follow when using herbal and mother tinctures?

Using chamomile to help induce sleep is a lighter dose of medicine (and less risk of side-effects), but there are botanical herbs and plants that can have a strong effect on the human body.

This is why I recommend that mother tinctures be used with caution and ideally under the advice of a homeopathic practitioner.

Here are my suggestions:

  • Seek advice from a homeopathic professional before using mother tincture remedies.

  • Do not overdose on the standard dosage. Usually, mother tinctures are taken by a prescribed number of drops. Taking double doses (or more) is not usually recommended.

  • Do not self-medicate for curing strong or chronic illnesses by buying mother tinctures online. As mentioned, seek advice from a medical professional for illnesses that should be treated by a medical doctor (gallstones, heart problems, gastrointestinal disorders, etc.)

  • Do not take mother tinctures over long-periods of time (typically the dose is for less than one month).

  • Mother tinctures usually expire within a month after being opened and then should be discarded (unlike typical homeopathic remedies, which have a much longer shelf life).

  • Let your doctor know if you are taking mother tinctures before any surgical operation or other medical treatment, including discussion with your doctor about combining herbal or mother tinctures and taking pharmaceutical drugs.

Final Thoughts

Herbal tinctures and mother tinctures are some of nature’s best homeopathic remedies to have on hand. With these facts, you can make better choices about your natural home treatments.
